Arizona Drug Abuse

According to the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) Arizona has one of the highest substance abuse rates among several categories. Although methamphetamine and marijuana are cited as the most abused drugs in Arizona, there is also a very high rate of prescription drug abuse.

As a result of the elevated us of drugs in the state, the drug-related deaths were also higher than average. Over 1,000 people passed away in 2009 as a consequence of drug use.

Treatment admission rates in the state have risen dramatically for meth, marijuana, heroin and other opiates such as prescription painkillers. Rates for cocaine and crack have decreased in the past decade. A recent news report indicated that Arizona ranks sixth in the nation for the number of deaths caused by prescription drug abuse.

Although efforts to reduce prescription drug abuse, such as prescription drug monitoring programs, seem to have a positive effect, it by no means eliminates the supply or the demand. Therefore there is still a great need for addiction treatment programs, whether for medication abuse, illicit drug addiction and alcoholism.
